Kilquhanity House
"<div>Kilquhanity House became Scotland’s only ‘free school’ in 1940 and is still the mainspring of child- centred ‘free school’ education in Scotland, now owned and managed by Shinichiro Hori, a Japanese educator who has spent his life studying western progressive education. Kilquhanity serves as a Scottish base for Japanese children, students and adults visiting the UK and exploring Scottish and UK culture. Kilquhanity is currently working with local families and others in Scotland toward the opening of a new primary day school in 2013.<\/div><div>The main house dates back to 1820 with a wing added in 1840. The house is listed mainly in relation to the Doric columns either side of the main steps. Once a country gentleman’s residence, Kilquhanity has seen considerable change to become a place for children to learn and play. The school was recently featured in ‘Changing Classrooms’, which was produced by The Lighthouse (the Scottish Centre for Architecture, Design and the City), in partnership with the Scottish Government.<\/div>"
