It almost certainly commemorates Mary Kincaid (d 1801), widow of Rev Andrew Ross of Balsarroch and stepmother of the Arctic explorer Sir John Ross. Local folklore associates it with a dairymaid from Drumdow Farm who was killed by a bull, but this is unlikely.
