With its Italianate square tower, domed roof and cupola added in 1865, it was a landmark for boats approaching the town. Points of particular architectural interest include the stained-glass windows installed in 1922 in memory of local people who died in World War I. These were created by the City Glass Company of Glasgow and displayed at the Royal Academy in London.
