The key objectives were to build a contemporary highly efficient house and to maximize the amount of glazing and at the same time be able to enjoy and connect with the outstanding natural surroundings. The house is orientated towards the spectacular views and opens up to the South to optimize passive solar heat gain. The design takes advantage of the slope, provides additional living space and helps to reduce the footprint of the house.

Open floor plan living on the ground floor and maximizing the amount of glazing allows the house to open up to all surrounding views. The main building material is timber, which has been sustainably forested. The house is very well insulated; all glazing is triple glazed with excellent insulation values. Minimal energy from fossil fuels is required with heat and hot water provided through a ground source heat pump with electricity from 51 PV panels roof array. Off-site manufacturing reduced the build time to just three months.

Guided tours by the owners Tony and Beryl Harrison will look at the architecture, construction and energy efficient features of the house.
</dcterms:description>

Formerly known as The Public Hall, the building was renovated in 1951, the stage and auditorium were enlarged in 1970 and further work was carried out in 2007 after which the building was re-opened by Provost Ruth Leslie Melville MBE on 19th January 2008. The success of this work was recognised when Angus Council Property Division received the 2008 RIAS DIA award for Best Example of Environmental Improvement / Conservation. When opened in 1865, the building contained 'a museum and a large hall for concerts and public meetings' (Groome). It hosted touring plays and vaudeville, but was not successful until local flax manufacturers, the,Webster family gave their support and eventually gifted it to the town in memory of their son who was killed in the First World War. During the 1930s the Arbroath Follies became popular summer spectacles. The 1st floor hall retains portraits of Janet Webster (1819-1908) and Sir Francis Webster (her son). The latter, by Robert Gibb RSA, was presented by 'Arbroath Liberals and Other Friends, In Recognition of His Eminent Public Services, Arbroath 20 April 1912'. The water-powered mill produced oatmeal and animal feed, as well as providing work for local people, right up until 1982.

Step inside the mill and discover how engineering ingenuity provided a means to save the ‘daily grind’ of producing your own flour and meal. These ideas gave birth to the machinery of the industrial revolution. Learn how trade shifted from a bartering system to monetary exchange. See the different types of food that people have lived on over the centuries, and watch the wheel turn and machinery move every day the mill is open – just as it’s done for generations.

Barry Mill is now one of only a handful of mills powered by water. Rebuilt after a fire around 1814, it is probably the largest and finest example of its type still in operation in Scotland.
</dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:title>Garlogie Mill Beam Engine and Turbine House, Garlogie</dcterms:title>
    <dcterms:description>
Garlogie is home to an incredibly rare steam beam engine which is still located in its original location, making it unique in Scotland, hence its Category A listed status. The engine dates from the late 1830s and originally powered the textile mill. In 1923 a small Escher Wyss water turbine with electricity generating plant was installed in a new building adjacent to the beam engine house to provide power to the Dunecht Estate. Garlogie Mill and the beam engine ceased operation in 1904 and the generating plant stopped in 1954 when the national grid came to the area. The mill is situated in the beautiful Garlogie Conservation Area.

On the day, visitors will be able to see around the two buildings that remain and view the beam engine and turbine. Guides will be on hand to explain the operation of the equipment alongside information panels and models. You will also be able to hear about plans for the future of the mill and beam engine.

Disabled Access to the Turbine House but not the Beam Engine House.
</dcterms:description>
