<dc:title>Green Homes Network: Moffat CAN</dc:title>
<dc:description>
In 2010 Moffat CAN (Carbon Approaching Neutral) rescued the derelict Old Church Depot and has been turning it into a model for low carbon living. The surrounding waste land is now a community market garden and allotments and the zero-carbon Church houses CAN’s domestic and business recycling operation, offices and Scotland’s first Aquaponics Greenhouse. Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics and is a sustainable way of growing edible fish and vegetables. Power and heat for the site is sourced from renewable energy.

Your Doors Open Day visit will include a tour of the site and a chance to experience how we can all CHANGE to look forward to a future of low carbon living.
</dc:description>

<item_type_metadata:activities>
The Green Homes Network, a new Scottish Government initiative managed by the Energy Saving Trust, was launched last year. The network provides individuals with the unique opportunity to visit a local home that has a renewables system installed. On Saturday 29 September homes across Dumfriesshire will open their doors to visitors.

Visitors can find out first-hand how different renewables systems run in real homes and hear about actual costs and savings.

Full details of all homes are available at greenhomesopenday.org.uk or call your local Energy Saving Scotland advice centre on 0800 512 012 to find out more.

www.greenhomesopenday.org.uk

Directions: If you are able, please park at Station car park on the left as you enter Moffat. The site can then be accessed by a short walk along the river to the back of the allotments. To access the site by car or from the centre of Moffat on foot, turn off the High Street onto Church Street, (next to the Bank of Scotland and opposite the war memorial). Continue along Church Street and on to Annanside. Moffat CAN is the big white building opposite the playing fields.

Limited parking at site for disabled car users only please.
</item_type_metadata:activities>
