The shop is one of the last surviving weaver's workshops in Kirkintilloch. Until about 1900 looms for six weavers were accommodated here, with weavers' families living on the floor above. After the looms were removed the vacant space served many different purposes, successively a mission hall, a scout hall, a factory workshop, a store and a shop.
