The Hippodrome is Scotland's oldest surviving purpose built cinema, designed by local architect Matthew Steele in 1911 in response to a commission from film-maker Louis Dickson, who wanted somewhere to show his films. The building's most notable feature is the large circular auditorium. A number of modifications have been made to the Hippodrome over the years, including the addition of a ticket office set in the corner angle with a small dome.
