Torwood Broch

Dublin Core

Title

Torwood Broch

Description

Torwood or Tappoch Broch is probably the best preserved of all the Lowland brochs with walls over 10ft high.  It stands at the high point overlooking the Roman road to Stirling and with panoramic views across the Forth Valley.  Due to its strategic location on the road this historic wood also saw William Wallace hiding in an oak tree, the Royalist army holding a defensive line against Oliver Cromwell and Donald Cargill excommunicating Charles II.  The broch was excavated in 1868 by Colonel Dundas and the interior left exposed.
