The Duffs were an ambitious family who acquired great wealth, power and status, finally marrying into the Royal family in the late 19th century. In the 20th century it was in turn a hotel, sanatarium and occupied by troops during the Second World War. In 1995, after extensive restoration, it opened as a visitor attraction and art gallery.
