WALK: Glasgow Through the Ages III - The Enlightenment City
Dublin Core
Title
Description
Meeting point: St Andrews in the Square 1 St Andrew's Square, Calton, G1 5PP
Join Niall Murphy of Glasgow City Heritage Trust on a tour showing how Glasgow evolved from the age of the Scottish Enlightenment and as a result of the innovative works of the Glasgow City Improvement Trust.
Please note the tour lasts approximately 2 hrs starting from St Andrews in the Square heading into Glasgow Cross via the Saltmarket then on into the Merchant City via the High Street and Bell Street. We will then take in Wilson Street, Glassford Street, Ingram Street, Virginia Street, Miller Street, and Royal Exchange Square before finishing at the Lighthouse. Highlights include the lost realm of the Tobacco Lords, the high jinks of the Hellfire club, the devastating economic impact of the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank, the works of the City Improvement Trust, Glasgow's interwar Avenue of the Americas and the County Buildings, Robert Adam's Trades House, a Post-modern courtyard, Sir JJ Burnet's baroque TSB Banking hall, and the link between Pariss Arc du Triomphe and the Equestrian Statue of the Duke of Wellington.
A free copy of our kids Merchant City trail will be available to keep the wee ones entertained.
