The Caledonian Canal, opened in 1822, was designed by Thomas Telford. The impressive Neptune's Staircase is the longest lock staircase in Britain, with a series of eight locks. Today the canal is a busy working waterway, welcoming a variety of boats. The towpaths are havens for wildlife, and are great places to explore on foot or bike.
