The Caledonian Canal, opened in 1822, was designed by Thomas Telford. It is a spectacular piece of engineering, and the impressive locks mean that boats can travel up- or downhill. Today, the canal is a busy working waterway, welcoming a wide variety of boats. The towpaths are havens for wildlife, and are great places to explore on foot or bike.
