The Bield

Dublin Core

Title

The Bield

Description

Listed Category B 1930-32 by James B Dunn for Edward S Harrison, woollen mill owner, Ex- Lord Provost of Elgin. Substantial 2-storey and attic house with Scottish Renaissance details. The arcaded loggia recalls Elgin's arcaded merchant houses, such as Braco's banking house of 1694. Much of the Bield is Harrison's own design and he completed the supervision of the construction after the death of the architect in 1931. The built-in garage was an innovation in 1930, the insurance company requiring that it be completely concrete lined and the inner door to the house be metal lined.
