In 1734 the Scots Mining Company built a house at Leadhills for their agent and manager, James Stirling. The House was designed by William Adam, one of a family of architects, and whose great achievement is Hopetoun House.

The house at Leadhills is probably the only surviving small house that William Adam built. The wooded areas have never been altered or "improved".
