The Southern Upland Way, from Portpatrick to Cocksburnpath, reaches its highest point, Lowther Hill, 2379ft, near Leadhills. Lowther Hill was once used as a place of burial of suicide victims who, because of their sin of having taken their own lives, could not be buried in the hallowed ground of a churchyard.
