Following the Prisons (Scotland) Act in 1839, the Argyllshire Prison Board was formed to oversee the prisons in Inveraray, Campbeltown and Tobermory. After much deliberation the Board secured a site for a new prison on the Castlehill. Thomas Brown designed this new prison, which was completed in 1847. The former Police Station was added to the northern side in the early 20th Century and remained in use until 2009 when the police moved into a modern building at Hazelburn.
