Mauchline: National Burns Memorial Homes

Dublin Core

Title

Mauchline: National Burns Memorial Homes

Description

Designed by William Fraser, the cottages were built 1896-98 in red sandstone to provide accommodation and facilities for elderly residents as a living memorial to Robert Burns a hundred years after his death. Buildings were added 1909-10, 1930-1, and 1938. The inhabitants look out on the landscape, the village and the surroundings that Burns wrote about. No other memorial reflects the spirit of Robert Burns in this unique way.
