The Castle Jail was built on the site of a royal castle. The castle has been completely demolished and the new jail was built in 1820 and is the only surviving example of a prison modelled on the principles of the prison reformer John Howard.

The jail consists of a governor�s house and three two-storey detention blocks set within an outer wall.�
