<dcterms:description>
Benholm Kirk stands on a site which dates to at least 1242AD. The first church was replaced in the 13th Century by a Gothic church. As the 19th Century approached a new church was needed and, on the 16th September 1832, 768 people heard the Rev James Glen dedicate Benholm Kirk as we know it today.

The Kirk houses items salvaged from the previous building. Amongst these items is a Sacrament House dating from the 15th Century, now built into the east wall. Another important item salvaged and displayed prominently to the left of the pulpit, is the Keith Monument, a Memorial to Lady Mary Keith. The daughter of George Keith, 5th Earl Marischall and his Countess, Lady Margaret Ogilvie, Mary died in 1620, aged only 4.

Another Monument to Robert Scott of Benholme, to the right of the pulpit dates from 1690.

Carved in white marble, this is a highly sophisticated memorial of its period in Scotland making it rare and unusual.

In 2006, with the help of the community, the Kirk was purchased and taken into care by the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust. The Kirk will be preserved and protected, enabling it to be used for occasional services continuing the centuries-old tradition of worship on the site.?

?

One of the Friends of Benholm Kirk is available to offer a talk on the church, subject to numbers.? Blue Marine Foundation
The Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) is working to solve the crisis in the oceans through providing innovative solutions to overfishing and enabling the creation of marine reserves. Although BLUE is a small NGO, it punches above its weight, having achieved a tremendous amount for the oceans in a short time. In 2014 BLUE won NGO of the Year in the PEA (People Environment Achievement) Awards in recognition that it was ‘getting results where they matter most’. In 2015 BLUE won four PEA Awards as part of the GB Oceans Coalition including ‘Overall Champion’.

Berwickshire Marine Reserve
Scotland’s coastal waters contain a remarkable underwater world, inhabited by thousands of different species.
The Berwickshire Marine Reserve works to preserve this unique environment through conservation and education.
Located on the east coast of Scotland, between the historic fishing towns of Eyemouth and St Abbs, the reserve supports conservation activities and research, while promoting responsible recreational use of the waters and advocating for sustainable fishing practices.
Berwickshire Marine Reserve is a registered charity and is Scotland’s only voluntary marine reserve.

We are a mainstream congregation of the national Church of Scotland comprised of men, women and young people of all ages and circumstance. As a congregation, we are very much aware of the privilege and responsibility which is ours inheriting such a place and, so, we are proud that our church is a church for everyone, whether they come to worship, learn or, simple, admire.

Apart from its obvious use as a centre of Christian worship, the building is much used for secular purposes. Concerts, recitals and exhibitions are regular features held by groups within the local community and beyond. The church has a strong relationship with South Lanarkshire Education Department and offers schools, both denominational and non-denominational, various tours/talks to meet their curriculum programmes. During summer, the church is open to the public. Tour guides are available each weekday and welcome visitors from throughout the world.

Depending on numbers, parking may be restricted to near the turnoff from Dumbarton Road. Otherwise go down to the left beyond the canal house. Walk back along the canal to the basin where most boats are moored.

This is the western most end of the Forth and Clyde Canal. Besides the boats and lockgates, there is the old rail bridge above and the arches below. This all comes under Scottish Canals, but your host today is the Bowling Harbour Project which you can find based in Arch 7 looking onto the Basin.

The arches now house a variety of commercial units. Those on the canal section have such things as cycle hire. Those overlooking the Basin have arts and crafts. The Bowling Harbour Project is a creative arts and heritage project and will be arranging stalls and activities. That includes a guided look at the basin and canal, its history and features that many visitors usually miss.

The canal locks are still operated, but at most times can be walked across. You can find the Bowling Harbour Project area either by walking down to the right immediately on arrival or by going right around the basin clockwise over the small bascule bridge. Above you will be the old railway bridge, the subject of plans for incorporation into the cycle route.

The basin is home to some some of the larger boats while the smaller ones and some canal barges moor in the higher water of the canal.

From this point you may see shipping passing on the Clyde. Nearby is the rather silted Bowling Harbour and beyond that the 16th Dunglas Castle with an obelisk raised as a memorial to Henry Bell.

All children need to be accompanied and care must be taken along the canal and basin edges. But with care this can be a most amazing place to visit and a fun day out for all the family.

The old tow path is now a cycle track that stretches eastwards all the way along the Forth and Clyde Canal. A link westwards up to the old railway route can eventually take you all the way to Loch Lomond. Consider cycling it, even for a short distance. The canal contributes to a great cycling environment, complete with mallard and swans for company.

</dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description>
Braemar Castle, a tower house construction, was built in 1628, as a Highland Hunting Lodge for the Earl of Marto replace the crumbling Kindrochit Castle. Burned in 1689 during the first Jacobite Uprising, it was subsequently restored as a garrison for Hanoverian soldiers in 1748. For the past 200 years it has been home to the Chiefs of Clan Farquharson, as well as a number of fascinating tenants. This interesting history offers many tales to tell as you tour the 12 furnished rooms. Now operated by the local community, it has undergone essential repairs, and is now looking to further secure it's future with it's 'Raising the Standard' project to reharl the castle, along with other vital improvements. The castle is a 5 Storey, L Plan structure with a star shaped curtain wall. It is prominently situated on a raised mound on the south side of the River Dee and can be seen as you come into Braemar from the east.

</dcterms:description>

This was a reaction to the plain ?barn like? structures which were typical of earlier church buildings.
