IN 1853 not one byt two railway companies arrived in Grantown to what became known as Grantown East and Grantown West. Alas both lines closed after 100 years of very valuable service to the community and the closure proved very expensive to the town. Grantown East has subsequently been revitalised.

The 'railways to Grantown' project progresses and Grantown looks forward to the return of its rail service. Meanwhile, there are several fantastic modern railway layouts that deserve to be on show. With the support of the volunteers who build, maintain, look after and exhibit these, and the support of Doors Open Days, it is hoped to have these on display in Grantown for the Festival Weekend in the former Hydro shop.

]]> The 1st Neilston Scout Group was founded in 1918. It is situated in Main Street, Neilston beside Neilston Juniors’ Football Stadium. In March 2004, the Scout Hall was the victim of an arson attack and had to be demolished. 8 years later, after much fund raising and grants, the new hall was completed and is now open for use.

]]> This 4 bedroom house was built in 1959 by McTaggart and Meikle. It has been retro-fitted to improve its energy efficiency. In addition to cavity wall insulation and deep cover in the loft, there are both hot water and electricity generating panels on the south facing roof. A wood burning stove makes it possible to keep warm without using fossil fuel. Graphs showing electricity and gas use for recent years will be available. The owner is a member of Transition Edinburgh Pentlands and the Edinburgh Sustainable Development Partnership.

Domecstatic is the third in a series of large-scale installations of words and imagery that explore personal social and political issues in Scotland in 2014. It is a new work by an innovative Scottish artist.

Questions of identity, community and place are at the heart of Angus Reid’s work. In 2012, he installed 6 Peaks at Axolotl Gallery, placing the Pentland hills in a Georgian interior. The account of climbing the six peaks it took to walk away from heartbreak translated into a work that read directly and simply, to an audience that share this nearby landscape. Link: 6 Peaks

In 2013, Call for a Constitution, placed the formula for a people’s constitution in 25 public spaces across Scotland in anticipation of the government’s recent pledge to have a written constitution. These locations ranged from Mike Forbes’ famous anti-Donald Trump barn in Aberdeenshire to the STUC headquarters in Glasgow; from a bus stop in Harris to the Scottish Parliament itself. Now, the third in the series, Domecstatic, brings it all back home to the four-storey stairwell of an Edinburgh townhouse. In this unusual setting for public art, larger-than-life silhouettes are framed by four poems that seek company as they climb towards the light.

“… These poems and this installation reclaim the architecture of a private house for the imagination,” says the artist. “They invite everybody into what is otherwise a private space.”

The four poems invite the visitor to negotiate a journey from dark to light, from a narrow threshold to an expansive light-well. They have, as a visual counterpoint, the outline of those that have stayed in the house or passed through as visitors, over the course of one month this year. To fix this fleeting presence has been to pay homage to the history of visitors to this house, and to trace the shadow of something otherwise invisible: the idea that the house has a memory. After all, this same hall was used by the young James Clerk Maxwell, the father of modern physics, and his cousin, Jemima Wedderburn, for experiments with balloons.

“The great characteristics of this stairwell are the height, the light and the acoustics. It is a place capable of generating joy. Joy is the unexpected visitor: it is a necessary co-ordinate in the here and now, from which come generous meanings and values.

It was abandoned by its former owners in 1988 and rapidly fell into disrepair, suffering massive de-stabilisation and structural damage. Eventually Aberdeenshire Council took possession of the building via a Compulsory Purchase Order and took measures to stabilise it.

This Victorian Mansion was designed in 1891 for Arthur Sanderson, the famous whisky distiller who had bought a large collection of fine arts. However, since 1925 it has been the Headquarters of 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

The interiors were finely decorated by William Scott Morton, with each room individually designed according to the art displayed – a Grecian themed entrance hall, a Renaissance Dining Room, Drawing Room inspired by Robert Adam, and Louis XIII styled bedroom.

]]> �This small 'But & Ben' house sat derelict and uninhabited for over half a century. A family outing to Inverallochy and to nearby Maggie's Hoosie so inspired the Thomas-Wright family that they set about a 10 year project to renovate this humble, traditional Scottish building.

Keen to respect the conservation area in which 9 Shore Street sits, the external restoration work retains the original low-level roof line, the exposed granite walls, the window positions and the original footprint, as well other key features integral to its history.

Having been a working family home for most of its life, with a short spell as a fisherman's store in the late 20th Century, this But & Ben with a half-hoose addition, is now a family home again.The internal renovation drew its inspiration from the history of the building; the open-plan design informing contemporary living. The Thomas-Wrights are eager to gather people's memories and knowledge of the building and its past inhabitants.

]]> The present Abbey Church has a long history dating back to 1164 when a Cistercian Abbey was founded here where it flourished for 200 years the Abbey. The present church was built in the 1860s and has a striking hammer beam roof constructed by workmen from the Dundee Shipyards. There is an 1892 Wandsworth 2-manual pipe organ.

]]> The Abbey Theatre Club has been in its current location since 1964. Originally an old 'hackle' store, the distinctive sandstone building had also been used as the offices of the Old Arbroath Gas Company and a fire appliance store during the war. Extensive renovations turned this derelict building into a working theatre.

Following a complete refurbishment in 1995 with the help of National Lottery Funding, the theatre now boasts a 79 seater auditorium, full backstage dressing facilities, 2 coffee-lounges and extensive storage space for scenery, props and costumes.

The Abbey Theatre Club produces a number of plays every year, including a pantomime which is often a completely original production. Productions cover a wide range of tastes, from Scots comedies to thrillers and musical plays. The Club also has an active youth group.

Run as a charity with no outside funding, the running of the Abbey Theatre Club and the upkeep of the building is the effort and responsibility of a very hard working group of volunteers who are passionate about the theatre.

]]> Abden House was built in 1855 for Thomas Nelson, founder of the Scottish publishers of the same name, and designed by civil engineer Thomas Davies. Today it?s the property of the University of Edinburgh, gift to them by Sir Donald Pollock.

Built with three storeys in the Jacobean revivalist style of the 19th century, Abden faces a carriage circle with gates at the end of Marchhall Crescent. It has an irregular plan with single story wings on the North and South sides.

]]> Community-owned Abernethy Old Kirk, which is Grade C-listed, dates back to the 1760s. The site dates back as a religious site to the 1180s according to a Latin manuscript.The building has a unique layout in that the pulpit in the centre of the south wall with pews in a "horseshoe" shape.

It is used for weddings, funerals, occasional worship, talks, concerts and various cultural displays and exhibitions.

]]> Built in 1593, the oldest house in Inverness has witnessed the Covenanting times, Jacobite risings and two world wars - if only the walls could talk!

Abertarff is the oldest house in Inverness. Tucked away on Church Street it's a 2.5 storey town house with a projecting turnpike stairway. It was owned briefly by the Fraser of Lovat Family, whose clansmen fought on the Jacobite side at the Battle of Culloden.

In the 19th Century the building was acquired by the Commercial Bank of Scotland but after being split up for housing, the site fell into disrepair. It was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1963 and the building was restored by the Trust in 1966.

Over the past 50+ years, Abertarff House has been used for many things including the headquarters for An Comunn Gaidhealach (The Gaelic Association), a shop and the Trust's regional headquarters.

Aboyne & Glen Tanar Memorial Hall, known as the ?Victory Hall?, is set in the heart of the village of Aboyne, Royal Deeside. It is a substantial granite building of character, both inside and out and is an unusually grand war memorial building.??? The building contains stained glass windows and panels bearing the names of those who fell for their country, and on the outside is the inscribed foundation stone.

Inside, in the large Main Hall, the roof has decorative open timber purlins and trusses; the massive timbers having come from the forest of Glen Tanar.?? There is a plaque bearing the names of those who served in the Great War and survived.? In the Formaston Room is the Formaston Stone, an ancient Pictish cross slab stone with interlaced carving, a Pictish mirror symbol and Ogham inscription.

The Hub ??The Victory Hall is also the Doors Open Days hub this year.? At the hub you will be able to find more information about what to see and do over the weekend.? The hall will also be home to various displays from local historical and interest groups in addition to the Council?s Built Heritage Team, Archaeology, Local History and Archive services. The former church was built in 1859 in the Gothic style and its ecclesiastical use continued after the union of the Established and Free churches in 1929 until 1940 when it was used as a store during the Second World War. From 1946 onwards it has been used as a Masonic Temple. The building also boasts a beautifully restored stained glass window by local artistic, Michael Zappert.

�Designed for George Coats, cotton thread manufacturer in Paisley, who became Baron of Glentanar, the church is a Category A listed building built in the Gothic style. The design is based on a 13th Century church in Leicestershire. The church is built of Kemnay granite with very high quality fittings. Inside the church the fine timber carving on the organ case and windows is attributed to the William Morris workshop. The aisle windows have 15th to 17th Century fragments of British and Continental glass, depicting heraldry and saints.

]]> This church is an early 1970s multi functional church building by local architects Hugh Wilson and Lewis Womersley and has a magnificent suite of rooms.

]]> The building was A listed in January 1966 and described as the grandest surviving original domestic façade on George Street. It was built by James Nisbet, circa 1790, for his own use. There were subsequent alterations to the ground floor by Knox and Hutton in 1883 but in 1978-80 the ground floor was reinstated by Covell Matthews Partnership to as near as possible the original design.
