Kirkmaiden Old Kirk (Kirk Convenant)

As trouble and religions strife racked Scotland and noblemen and gentry queued to sign with their own blood the National Covenant, protesting against the rules and regulations being forced on them, work began on a small church, a Kirk.

It was the year 1668 and the wee Kirk, Kirkmaiden Old Parish Church, is still there today, known as Kirk Covenant, the southernmost parish in Scotland. It stands on the hill, a mile above the village of Drummore and is a fascinating place to visit.

See a family crypt, gravestones dating back to 1698, the pulpit under which a minister is buried, the bell made in 1534 and experience the peace of a place of worship that has stood as a house of God for more than 340 years.

Local historians and Parishioners will be on hand to provide guided tours of the Kirk and the extensive and historical graveyard.

Directions:
When entering Drummore turn right at the “Welcome to Drummore” sign. Follow signs to Mull of Galloway and the Kirk is at Kirkmaiden.

Roadside parking in area adjacent to church. There are three entrances, of which the top entrance if most suitable for those with mobility dificulties
